8 Faux Pas Youre Making In Work Emails Without Realizing
8 Faux Pas Youre Making In Work Emails Without Realizing In todays digital age, its elend uncommon to spend more time interacting with colleagues via email than communicatingface to face or even over the phone. Because email is an essential part of daily professionaloperations, knowing the ins and outs of email etiquette is crucial. Check yourself for these email mishaps before the next time you press send1. Misspelling Someones NameOf course, you should always read over your messages before you click send, but if theres one place you should make sure you pay attention, its the personenname of the recipient. Whether you carelessly leave out a letter or instantly type the most common spelling, while some can shrug off the mishap, others may take the lack of attention personally. The best way to avoid this is by copying and pasting the recipients name into your greeting.2. Over-IntroducingThough a polite greeting and opening should be included, when you need information from someone, i ts best to be direct. Giving extraneous information isnt necessary and having to take the time to read about how great they are can be more cumbersome than appreciated. When making a request or asking a question, hold the excessive flattery.3. Copying Multiple PeopleUnless someone has a record of ignoring emails, copying someones boss or colleague when making a request makes it seem like you dont trust that theyre capable of doing their job, or youre really impatient. In smaller businesses, the people you email could be sitting next with each other.4. I Anticipate Your Timely ReplyNothing makes me want to put off responding to an email more than someone telling me when Im going to respond to an email. It feels passive aggressive and assumes that the recipient has the time to respond in a timely manner. People have long to-do lists, and you never know if your email is the second or seventieth theyve received that day.5. Per My Last EmailPer my last email is basically the bless your h eart of the office world. Whether you intend for it to read this way or not, the recipient can interpret that youre making a subtle dig that they arent paying attention.6. Dear SirsAs someone who has answered an alias for companies, I can say that even in 2018, its incredible how many people assume a person representing a high-power institution is a man (or a group of men).7. Marking Your Non-Urgent homilie UrgentUnless the person you need to reach has WIFI access but not phone reception, I recommend speaking in person or on the phone if you need to reach someone extremely quickly. If email is the primary mode of communication where you are, use the word urgent sparingly and correctly.8. Not Saying Thank YouA little gratitude goes a long way. After someone has fulfilled a request for you, no matter how small, those two words can a long way. People remember who appreciates them, and in my experience are more likely to respond quickly to future requests.--Kayla Heisler is an essayist and Pushcart Prize nominated poet. The pros and cons of the most popular non-dairy milks
The pros and cons of the most popular non-dairy milksThe pros and cons of the most popular non-dairy milksEvery week a new previously unheard of non-dairy milk seems to seize the attention of whole milk abstainers everywhere- a demographic that has experienced a 61% growth since 2012. Several years into the cow-milk exodus we have a fairly healthy bounty of substitutes to choose from. Theres pecan milk, coconut milk, rice milk, and even camel milk. The health benefits are typical answers to the negative effects associated with traditional milk but how many of the alternatives actually stand on their own as far as dietary merits are concerned?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraAlmond MilkAlmond milk is the first non-dairy celebrity that I can remember. The blend of almonds and water is strained and reborn as a smooth nutrient rich, low-calorie beverage perfect for vegans and those tha t are lactose intolerant. Because many of the strongest health benefits of homemade almond milk are severely lessened by the dilution process practiced by many commercial brands, its important to read labels when shopping around for an optimal version of the dairy alternative.Almond milk is rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly Vitamin E, a vitamin known to aid in the prevention of cancer, heart disease in addition to boosting skin health and halting the risk and slowing the effects of cognitive diseases like morbus alzheimers. Most commercial brands of almond milk are further enriched with Vitamin E, with one serving typically providing 37% of your daily requirement.A cup of almond milk will run you between 60 and 80 calories, which is about 80 calories less than a glass of whole milk, and about 26 fewer calories than a cup of skim milk.Even with all of its benefits taken into consideration consumers with pre-existing thyroid conditions might want to consider other milk optio ns. Individuals should also speak with a pediatrician before administering almond milk to infants as it doesnt really provide the same necessary nutrients found in formula. Moreover, the production of almond milk contributesconsiderably to groundwater depletion.More than 80% of the worlds almond crop is grown in California, which has been experiencing its worst drought on record. It takes 1.1 gallons (5 liters) of water to grow one almond, and thanks to the big profits they bring in, almond orchards continue to be planted, reports Emine Saner of The GuardianThe health benefits all depend on how many almonds are used. Remember brand matters, as some distributors provide calcium enriched versions as well as unsweetened options. Fortunately making almond milk in your own homeisnt all that difficult. Simply finely grind some almonds, pop them in a blender with water, then strain all the unwanted pulp.Whether your purchasing from the store or whipping up your own batch, be sure to find ot her more efficient methods of obtaining protein and calcium if youre making an effort to steer clear of dairy milk.Soy MilkSoy milk actually contains more protein than almond milk even if it ultimately has more calories. More substantially though, soy milk isnt derived from a water-intensive crop like almond milk is, making its production much more environmentally friendly.Soy milk is composed of soybeans that are soaked and boiled with water. Non-Dairy milk has no saturated fat or cholesterol. The compounds found in soy milk are said to help prevent several illnesses, some of which include prostate cancer, diabetes, and liver disease.A single cup of unsweetened soy milk contains about 301 milligrams of calcium and about 1.1 milligrams of iron, in addition to being rich in B- 12, which helps us produce DNA.Soy milk is not recommended to those with allergies or patients recently recovering from breast cancer due to the chemicals found in soy milk that are similar to estrogen. Even fo r drinkers without dietary constrictions soy tends to contain added sugar making it a less than ideal weight loss beverage.Oat MilkThe organically creamy-sweet beverage seems to be the latest coffeeconnoisseurs darling. Its reportedly great for bone health, lowers cholesterol, and its an excellent source for Vitamin B, Vitamin D, fiber and calcium. Though a glass of oat milk contains more calories than found in a glass of both almond and soy milk, its still significantly lower than a glass of whole milk.Oat milk has no lactose, nuts or any other common allergens. More than 94% of soy crops are genetically modified, so if genetic modification is a point of contention for you oat milk might be the way to go. Similarly to almond milk, you can make the stuff at home very easily, with a little bit of cinnamon, oats, and water. On the flip-side oat milk is typically higher in carbs than most common nut-based milks.Which is the healthiest? It depends on what role you need milk to serve in yo ur particular diet. If youre looking for protein, soy milk is your best bet, with 7 grams in a single glass (there are roughly 8 grams in a glass of whole milk). Almond milk doesnt provide very much protein and oat milk only fares fractionally better with 4 grams of protein per glass. If youre looking to shave some pounds, almond milk will serve you much better than rice, coconut, oat, and even soy, because its so low in calories and saturated fat. Oat milk tends to be more naturally flavorful thus a better compliment to beverages like lattes or macchiatos. In any case, non-dairy milk is fortified with different attributes so checking the labels is vital to accommodate your nutritional needs. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, accordi ng to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

8 Common Ways Students Fail a Checkride
8 Common Ways Students Fail a Checkride8 Common Ways Students Fail a CheckrideThe check ride is the final step before becoming a certificated pilot, and its a large, stressful step With the never-ending list of details to study and maneuvers to practice, check ride preparation can seem impossible. If your instructor signs you off for a check ride, chances are good that youll pass with flying colors, but mistakes happen, especially when were nervous. Heres a list of common reasons students fail check rides. Dont make one of these common mistakes 8 Common Mistakes Showing up Without the Minimum Training/Hours LoggedOne of the most common check ride problems begins with the initial paperwork review. Before anything else, the designated examiner must first review your logbook and flight times to enaya that youve honigwein the minimum requirements. Make sure you and your instructorgo over the specific requirements for the certificate being sought. The private pilot certificate, for exa mple, requires that applicants have at least 40 hours of total time, two of which must be instructional, three of which must be instrument instruction, three of which must be cross-country instruction, three of which must be night instruction, and so on, along with all of the proper endorsements. Your instructor should ensure that youve completed each of these requirements before you see the examiner, but its not uncommon for something to be overlooked. Showing up With an Aircraft That Is Not AirworthyA designated examiner wont get into an airplane that is not airworthy. Make sure your airplane is up to date with all of the required inspections. Many check rides have been called off and rescheduled because the aircraft is not deemed airworthy during the initial part of the check ride.Failing to Use ChecklistsFailing to use checklists, or using one only casually, tells an examiner that youll forgo the rules for the sake of your own convenience. Even if youre able to safely conduct th e flight without a checklist, the lack of checklist use might be enough for the examiner to feel unsafe and deem you an unsafe pilot. Use the checklists Theyre there for a reason. Disregarding a Topic Listed as a Special Emphasis AreaThe special emphasis areas are listed in the beginning of the practical test standards, and they include things like collision avoidance, positive exchange of flight controls, and wake turbulence avoidance, among other things. unterstellung areas are specifically set aside by the FAA as areas that pilots should focus on in order to improve the overall safety of general aviation, and if you dont play along, the FAA wont like it. Find and study these special emphasis areas before your check ride. Failing to Recover From a Stall CorrectlyStalls, spins, and loss of control accidents are still the most common cause of general aviation accidents today. A stall is potentially the most important maneuver to avoid and/or recover from when it occurs, so if you st ruggle with them, get extra help before your check ride. An improper stall recovery procedure is grounds for failure on any check ride.Failing to Brief Spins and Spin Recoveries CorrectlySpins and spin recovery procedures are important. The examiner, at the very least, needs to know that youre aware of what a spin is and how to get out of it. If you arent, you have no business flying around in small airplanes. Botching the Landing After an Unstable ApproachManyaccidents and incidents in general aviation still occur during the landing phase of flight, making the go-around a very important maneuver to master. Messing up the go-around (by bringing the flaps up before adding power, for instance) is a safety issue and a common reason for failing a check ride. We dont practice go-around procedures enough - we all want to land perfectly -so get out there and practiceUndershooting or Overshooting During a Simulated Emergency ApproachTo make sure youll handle a real-life emergency well when youre faced with one, the examiner will want to see that you can accomplish an off-airport landing if necessary. Overshooting or undershooting the landing spot, not obtaining best glide speed, not turning directly toward your landing spot, or delaying the emergency landing checklists can all lead to a check ride failure.

3D Printing and the Jumping Robot
3D Printing and the Jumping Robot 3D Printing and the Jumping Robot 3D Printing and the Jumping Robot3D printing has helped improve many fields, so it would only be natural to see some impact on the field of robotics. As a postdoc at Harvard University, Michael Tolley, now an assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego, got in hauch with people in chemistry who had been working on the idea of soft machines. And a question was, Can you make a robot move and be composed primarily of soft materials? he says. He became part of a team that decided to find out the answer. Get Moving A major challenge was that it is hard to move pneumatic robots quickly when they are non-tethered. Its fine to be tethered for some things, but if you want to do search and rescue you have to be able to cut the cord, he says. Thats a major area of how robots can be of value. Thats where wecame up withjumping as a way to move quickly. Rob Shepherd, now at Cornell, came up with internal combust ion as a way to help make this happen.Silicone rubber is naturally resistant to extreme temperatures and pressure. Image Harvard University And all of what they would create for this jumping robot would be 3D printed except for the microcontroller valves, jump batteries, and fuel sources, he says. The body of the robot, the rigid core, and soft exterior were all printed, Tolley says. Some of it was actually very intuitive. Even though the team was focused on a soft body, batteries and motor controllers seemed to be incompatible. Unless youre going to reinvent all these things, you have to deal with the interface between hard control parts and soft bodies, he says. We thought we should grow hard components into a soft body, and they should not really be fixed to each other in any way, and it worked. But it was a perpetual challenge in terms of interfaces. Keeping things connected, considering pneumatic connections, ignore these and you could find the robot could be jumping violently into the air. Taking the Leap They hoped bringing in soft materials would absorb the impact of coming down from the jump, and prevent the creation from breaking. When you consider how much robotics can cost, anything that can help its lifespan has to be considered, he says. The soft materials help it work on many surfaces and for a longer period of time. The robot was ultimately designed in a nestled hemisphere design and is described by Tolley as looking like a deflated basketball. Then when oxygen and butane are injected, it becomes a full basketball and thats how the jump occurs. Testing proved successful, and the robot is able to repeatedly jump roughly a meter high without breaking. Even though Tolley says theyre proud of their accomplishments to this point, he says this marriage of differences came long before the team went to work. Much of the inspiration between soft and hard materials came from asking how nature does this, Tolley says. Like the octopus. It can be rigid when you think of the beak but then other parts of the body are soft. Its amazing what clues are all around us. 6 quick tips for making and keeping your summer goals
6 quick tips for making and keeping your summer goals6 quick tips for making and keeping your summer goalsWhen I was talking about my June goal with one of my closest friends, he said, Theres no way youre going to be able to do that. Watch me, I said. I bet you 100 push-ups you wont, he said. Deal. And we shook on it.Its officially June, which means summer is upon us.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreMost people I know think of this time of year as a time to day-drink by the pool, go to the beach, hang out on a boat (if you know someone with a boat), meet up with friends on rooftop bars, and so on. And while I certainly enjoy doing all those things, those activities actually arent the first things that come to mind when I think of summer. What I think of aregoals.More specifically, which goals Id like to achieve by the time fall comes around (and winter shortly after). For as long a s I can remember, this is how Ive always treated my summers- going as far back as summer vacation in high school, and even middle school. Summer was my time to explore new video games and challenge myself to defeat bosses. Summer was my time to get better at playing hockey, or record songs in my bedroom closet. Summer has always been a time of embracing a new challenge, and then pushing myself to overcome that challenge in a condensed period of time. So, if youre thinking about how you can make and keep your summer goals, here are 6 quick tips for you to run with. And dont forgettalking about your goalswont bring them to life.Youre going to have to work hard this summer to landsee your goals come to fruition.1. Set your intention for June, July, and August by writing it down somewhere you can see it on a daily basis.Telling yourself, This summer, Im going to isnt enough.Instead, take an afternoon or an evening and really think about what you want project you want to get done, what ski ll you want to practice, what goal you want to achieve- and then write it down.Write it somewhere you can see it. Write it somewhere thats part of your daily routine (like on your desk, or on your bathroom mirror). And then, taking a page out of one of my favorite books,Think and Grow Rich, read that intention or that reminder youve written down out loud on a daily basis.Speak it into existence.2. Set monthly, weekly, and even daily goals for yourself to reach- and check-in with yourself as often as possible along the way.Truthfully, goal-setting is easy. Its the accountability side of things people struggle with.Instead of thinking about your summer as one massive chunk of time (90 days), try to visualize your summer as 3 separate chapters (June, July, and August). Then, break each one of those chapters down into sub-chapters (Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4). And then within those sub-chapters, really internalize each day that makes up each one of those weeks (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, D ay 4, Day 5, Day 6, Day 7).Now, set micro-goals for each.Where do you want to be at the end of, say, June? And what goals do you need to achieve in order to get there? How can you break those goals down into weekly milestones? And how can you break each one of those milestones down into daily micro-milestones?The more you can help yourself see the next step in front of you (opposed to the entire 3-month journey), the more likely you are to remain consistent and connected to the process.3. Dont talk about your goals to anyone except 1 or 2 people in your life who will help hold you accountable. When I was talking about my June goal with one of my closest friends, he said, Theres no way youre going to be able to do that.Watch me, I said. Ive been putting this off for too long. Im going to do it.I bet you 100 push-ups you wont, he said.Deal. And we shook on it.Now, why I even had that conversation with my friend in the first place was because I wanted him to help hold me accountable. I wanted him to ask me in a week, or two weeks, how things were going- and how close or far I was from achieving my goal. What I dont recommend, however, is telling anyone and everyone in your life what your summer goals are. Why?Because science has actually proven that youre more likely to achieve your goals if you keep them to yourself (theres a terrific TED talk on the topic).4. Avoid making your summer goals the same types of goals you set all throughout the year.I find summer to be one of the most inspiring times of year. Its a great time to allow yourself to create things you might not normally create- or make progress in directions you wouldnt otherwise prioritize. For me, summer has always been about picking goals that are less directly correlated with professional success, and more about self-expression and long-term creativity. Its my way of maintaining some sort of connection to that child-like feeling of summer vacation, where these 3 months dont feel like the rest of the yea r.Ive always been a big believer in routine changes and creative breaks, so treat your summer as a way of reconnecting with a different part of yourself.Youll be thankful you did.5. Create a reading list that reinforces and inspires you in the same direction as your summer goals. One of the best ways to keep yourself engaged is to constantly feed yourself that same type of external material. For example, lets say your summer goal is to finish writing your first (or second, or third) book. Well, then I would recommend you read other books within your same genre- to keep the ideas flowing, and inspire you to see it through to the end. Id also recommend you listen to podcasts that touch on the same topics youre writing about (to give you some added perspectives), and that you watch documentaries or Netflix shows that tackle similar themes. All these input sources will only add fuel to the fire.6. Choose how you spend your summertime wisely.Of course, all the above means nothing unless you deliberately make the time to work toward your goals. This is always the hardest part for people- saying No to the Saturday neighborhood festival, or the group of friends that wants to go to the beach. We hate feeling left out. We dont always like the idea of staying home and working quietly, by ourselves. Sometimes, we even feel guilty for not being outside, for not being more social, for not X, Y, and Z.But these are the tough choices youre going to have to make- if you want to end the summer with a big goal of yours completed and achieved.Choose wisely. This article first appeared on Minutes. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
